Shrub or tree growing up to 5 meters, leaves are simple, alternate and shiny at the surface; flowers are terminal and axillary; yellow to various colors, 5 sepals with common base, stamens are indefinite in numbers but commonly as many as the petals, fruits; drupes. Native of Africa, probably introduced in the Philippines, cultivated for attractive flowers.
Odontonema strictum
This is a shrub growing to 3 m tall, with ovate leaves, acute tip, bright green to 12 cm long. Flowers are borne in long terminal spikes and extend above the leaves, bright red 4cm long. Native to Central America, cultivated in towns and cities in th Philippines. It prefers lightly shaded places and rich soil, and propagated by stem cuttings.
Ophiopogon jaburan
Ophiopogon jaburan is a stemless, grasslike perennial herb about 30-90 cm tall. Its leaves are nearly or quite flat, up to 90 cm long, with obtuse or abruptly pointed tips. There are varieties with striped leaves. Inflorescence is a bracted raceme, of about 7.5-15 cm length. It is supported on a scape nearly as long as the leaves. The flowers are white to lilac. It is native to Japan and was only recently introduced to the Philippines. Propagation is by rhizomes.
