Locally known as Achuete or Anatto. Tree 4 to 6 meters high, leaves; ovate, entire, alternate, heart shaped, in long peduncle, 8 to 20cm long, 5 to 12 cm wide, base broad, more or less cordate, apex acuminate. flowers white to pinkish, capsules or fruits; subglobose, green or reddish-purple, covered with long, slender, rather soft spines containing many small, dark-red seeds yields to anatto dye. Common in gardens, sometimes cultivated. A native of tropical America.

Axillary flowers, solitary or in threes, subtended by bracts with colors ranging from red, purple, pink or white. The pedicels almost entirely united with midrib of colored bract. Perianth of flower is tubular, constricted above with 5 spreading lobes. Popularly cultivated ornamental plant in the Philippines. Native to South America.
